During this first week, you will be menstruating. Right now is a good time to start making lifestyle changes that can help ensure a healthy pregnancy and birth. Cut down your caffeine intake. Quit smoking, consuming alcoholic beverages or taking presciption or illegal drugs. Start eating a balanced diet. Incorporate prenatal vitamins or folic acid supplements into your daily routine. Regular intake of folic acid can dramatically reduce your risk for neural tube defects such as spina bifida, Down syndrome or other central nervous system defects.
